Statistics suggest that roughly two-thirds of Americans lose their virginity before turn 18. Considering that young people are also marrying later in life, it's no wonder premarital sex has become so common, said Woodrum.
This, however, is not to say that US young people are living the stories of characters in movies and TV shows. On the big screen, sex rarely comes with consequences - and almost never with guilt.
For young New York journalist Dawn Eden, premarital sex didn't bring guilt so much as the realization that, in having sex, she was actually getting no closer to marriage. She wrote about her experience in the book The Thrill of the Chaste.
"I really waned to be married, and I felt that no man would marry me if he hadn't had sex with me," she told pop culture Relevant Magazine. "But I began to realize that all the sex I'd ever had in my life had actually taken me further away from having the kind of committed relationship that could be sustained and lead to marriage."
