Food prices at some campuses, like some in Hubei and Guangdong provinces, are keeping up with the rise. However, at other universities, prices are steady. At Henan University, for instance, a fixed meal in the dining hall this month is stable at 2.5 yuan.
The central goernment, local government and universities themselves are subsidizing some school canteens to offset the hike. The Wuhan municipal government, for intstance, has come up with 20 million yuan for college an other school canteens in the city.
The central government also offers subsidies for needy students, who account for about 14 percent of the student population. In Xiamen, Fujian Povince, needy students get a 14-yuan subsidy from the local government every month. In Hunan, they get 100 yuan total from the provincial government.
The Ministry of Education is also promising that tuition won't go up.
