The rise of the "real name" system seems to be a welcome development. Bai Dong, a student from Dalian Maritime University, says he's at ease when he surfs Xiaonei.com and meets new users.
He says Xiaonei has made his routine life much more colorful: Besides simply exchanging messages with new friends online, he's joined them for offline activities "because they're mostly from a similar education background and they seem reliable," he said.
"The group members are listed by their schools and majors, so I can easily find people from the same school."
Liu Yue, a white-collar worker in Shanghai, has benefited from the real-name system on Facebook in a different way. She used the site to find two of her old middle school classmates.
In fact, lots of people on Facebook or Xiaonei.com find old classmates and friends by typing their names in the search box.
"This helps us sustain our friendship," Liu said. "Besides, we can get fresh information about their current life and future plans."
