DNN Requirements

The following are required for DNN Platform 9.4 and DNN Evoq 9.4.

Supported Operating Systems

  • Windows 8
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2016

.NET Framework

  • 4.7.2+

Web Server

  • Microsoft IIS 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, 10

Database Server

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express R2
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2014
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (for DNN 8.0.4+)
  • Microsoft Azure SQL Database

Browsers

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • IE 11
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari for Mac
Note: DNN products are tested on the latest browser versions at the time of release. Although untested, older browsers could still work.

Developer IDEs

For creating extensions:

  • Visual Studio 2015
  • Visual Studio 2017
  • Visual Studio 2019
Note: Starting with DNN 9.4.0, .NET Framework 4.7.2+ is required, however, it is still possible to use older versions of Visual Studio, and .NET Framework for extension development. The minimum version for extension development is dependent upon the targeted DNN Minimum Version.

For contributing to the DNN Platform:

  • Visual Studio 2017
  • Visual Studio 2019

Recommended Environment

  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • IIS 8.5
  • SQL Server 2014 or Later
  • For developers: SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition or Express

Steps

  1. Install SQL.
    1. Check compatible versions.
    2. Choose New SQL Server stand-alone installation....

    3. Include any product updates.
    4. Accept the defaults in Feature Selection, Instance Configuration, and Server Configuration.
    5. In Database Engine Configuration, under Authentication Mode, choose Mixed Mode.

      Database Engine Conf > Authentication Mode > Mixed Mode

    6. Accept the defaults in remaining dialogs.
  2. Create a SQL database for your website.
    1. Start the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio app.
    2. In the Object Explorer panel, right-click on Databases, and choose New Database....

    3. Enter the name of the new database. Click/Tap OK.

      Enter new database name.

      Note: Remember the database name, because it will be required by the DNN Installation Wizard.


  1. Create a SQL user account.
    1. Under Security, right-click on Logins, and choose New Login....

      Under Security, right-click Logins, choose New Login.

    2. Enter the username, choose SQL Server authentication, add a password, uncheck Enforce password policy, and choose the database.

      Choose SQL Server authentication. Uncheck Enforce password policy.

      Note: Remember the username and password, because they will be required by the DNN Installation Wizard.


  1. Give the new SQL user db_owner access to the new database.
    1. In the Object Explorer panel, under your database > Security, right-click on Users, and choose New User....

    2. Set User type to SQL user with login.

    3. Enter the username of the account you just created, then click/tap Check Names.

      Enter the new account's login name, then click/tap Check Names.

    4. Under Select a page, select Membership, and check the db_owner database role membership.

      For Membership page, check db_owner.

Prerequisites

Steps

  1. Enable IIS.
    2. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off.

    3. Under Internet Information Services, turn on the following:
      • Web Management Tools: IIS Management Console
      • World Wide Web Services
        • Application Development Features: ASP.NET 3.5 and 4.6
        • Common HTTP Features: Default Document and Static Content
        • (Optional) Security: Basic Authentication
      • Internet Information Services Hostable Web Core

      IIS options to turn on

You can create a new website or set up an existing one for use with DNN. Choose one of the next two steps.

  1. To create a new website and point it to the DNN installation folder:
    1. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
    2. In the Connections panel, expand your host tree, right-click on Sites, and choose Add Website.

    3. Enter the new website's name and choose the location.

    4. Enter the Host name.

      Developers and Designers: If setting up a local development environment, you can use www.dnndev.me (or any subdomain). DNNDEV.ME is a registered domain which points to the loopback address of 127.0.0.1, so it will always resolve locally.

      Administrators: If setting up a live website, use your website's domain.


      For local, use www.dnndev.me.

  2. To use an existing IIS website:
    1. In the Connections panel, right-click on the name of the existing website, and choose Edit Bindings....

      Right-click on the website's name and choose Edit Bindings.

    2. In Site Bindings, click/tap Add.... In Add Site Binding, enter the Host name.

      Developers and Designers: If setting up a local development environment, you can use www.dnndev.me (or any subdomain). DNNDEV.ME is a registered domain which points to the loopback address of 127.0.0.1, so it will always resolve locally.

      Administrators: If setting up a live website, use your website's domain.


      For local, use www.dnndev.me.

  3. If you do not use NETWORK SERVICE as the user account to run your website, verify that IIS AppPool\AppPoolName has Full or Modify permissions for the DNN installation folder.

    The account IIS AppPool\AppPoolName is automatically created by IIS.
