Durden served as offensive coordinator for nine years and quarterbacks coach for eight. Malone was in the program for six years as the offensiveline coach and one as the rungame coordinator.
"Jeff and Chris have represented our program well and made a difference in the lives of many of our studentathletes," athletics director Jeff Bourne said in a statement.
The Dukes went 74 this year and were excluded from the postseason.
Volunteers hire Jones away from Cincinnati
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Tennessee selected Cincinnati's Butch Jones as its fourth coach in six seasons, ending a tumultuous couple of days for both parties. He went 2713 in three seasons at Central Michigan and was 2314 at Cincinnati the past three years.
Jones now faces the task of rebuilding a former Southeastern Conference power that has posted three consecutive losing seasons.
Tennessee had been seeking a new coach since the Nov. 18 firing of Derek Dooley, who went 1521 in his threeyear tenure.
The Volunteers contacted Jon Gruden, an ESPN analyst, and former Super Bowlwinning coach, who indicated he wasn't interested. The Vols then pursued Charlie Strong, who said Thursday he had turned down their offer and would stay at Louisville.
Jones will become Tennessee's fourth coach in a sixseason stretch, not including offensive coordinator Jim Chaney's stint as interim head coach in the 2012 season finale after Dooley's dismissal. Phillip Fulmer was fired in 2008 after posting a 15252 record.
Lane Kiffin coached Tennessee in 2009 before leaving for Southern California. Dooley lasted three years. State coach Dave Doeren has made his first coaching hire, bringing in Ryan Nielsen to coach the defensive line and serve as recruiting coordinator.
