The Westport Senior American Legion team overachieved
The Westport Senior American Legion team overachieved and played with a lot of heart. Going into the season, I projected Westport to go 10-17 because it didn't have All-FCIAC players Jack Hennessy and Grant Moss along with lefty Rob Gau, expected to be Staples High School's ace pitcher next year, and infielder Tyler Jacobs (Gau and Jacobs played for Baseball U New England, which played in national tournaments and raised their games to the next level in these tourneys).
In the end, Westport maintained a never-say-die attitude and was still alive for the playoffs until the final day of the season, finishing at 13-14.
Brendan Bernstein, Ben Lipper and Colin McCarthy had productive summers and played in the All-Star game. The trio, along with Gau and Jacobs, are expected to play a major role for the Wreckers next spring.
Lefty ace David Speer and shortstop Jimmy Sikorski were the two best players on
thzsawer the team, but didn't play in the game because it was only for those who will be in high school next year.
