This is 6 minutes English from bbclearningenglish.com.

- Hello and welcome to this week's 6 minutes English. I'm Dan Mork Smith and today I'll join by Kate.(and

today I'm joined by Kate) Now, Kate, here is a good question for you(here's an awkward question for you):

Do you consider yourself a good liar?

- A good liar? Oh,no, absolutely not. I've never been a good liar. I always get a bread red(I always go

bright red) and  I can't look to the person I'm talking to in the eye.

- Well, this week show is all about lies and lying according to one researcher that most people tell two

important lies a day. And third of all conversations involve some formal(form) deception. Deception is

something that's misleading dishonest or untruthful. So this week's question for you Kate is according to a

recent survey which profession admits to lie(lying) the most?
It is
A. teachers
B. doctors
C. politicians

- What I said is quite an obviously one(Well I think that's quite an obvious one); I would say C

politicians because doctors and teachers of course are very opprive(upright) members of society and they

didn't lie often.

- OK. Well remember the question was which profession admits to lying the most. So we'll see if politicians

are right at the end of the program20:37 2010-4-14.

- Now. Lying is a very common human activity. Some people say that it is undevelopable(unavoidable) part of

human 20:38 2010-4-14nature. But how can you tell if someone isn't telling the truth?

- We're going to hear now from socologist(psychologist)  Saron Nil who specilises in the science of

deception. How did she  say we might identfy if someone is lying.

- They atend(tent) to be more general about things they say . They pors(pause) more and structure. In

truthful statements for example, we know the people don't tent to report things in a structured (way). A

motivate  liar will do this they (will) plan to liars.

- So she says that some of the lying the story might sound a big more planned or deliverate, more

structured or controlled.

- She also said that a motivated liar will plan their lies. If you(are) motivated means you have a reason

for doing something. So a motivated liar has a purpose for not telling the truth.

- well There's a proper(verbal) ways of telling whether someone is lying. But some people say that they

(you) can also find out if they're lying (someone is lying) with a lie detector or a polygraph machine.

- A lie detector is a machine to measure your body reactions as you answer xxx(certain) questions to see

how your body changes as you resonde and to catch you if you're lying. So let's listen to lie detection

specialist Jerry Belt explaining how lie detectors work? Can you tell me what physical reactions the lie

detector machines clear to do test? (can you tell me what physical reactions the lie-detector machines

claim to detect?)

- The polygraph is effctively amedicalys ment(a medical instrument). It measure things that happening your

body whether you like or not. your breathing, your pause, your skin, your xxxx responsal or the xxxx your

part.( Your breathing, your pulse, your skin, your galvanic skin response or the sweatiness of your palm.)

- OK. So the polygraph clear(claim) to identify physical changes of your body if you're lying. They include

a changes of breathing parterns, your pose or heart beat or increased switing.(These include a change in

breathing patterns, your pulse or heartbeat, or increased sweating).

- But some people say that this(these) tests are unscientific (aren't scientific) enough. What're more, xxx

it's possible to trick the machine.(they claim that it's possible to trick the machine) You can do this by

changing your phsical gree actions(changing your physical reactions) when you answer the control question.

Can you explain more these Kate?(Can you explain what these are Kate?)

- Sure. well, control questions in the lie detector test are the questions what you'll expect to lie(where

you're expected to lie). But not about specific venture casion.(but not about a specific event or occasion)

The question such as have you ever lie to anyone in a sourity(in authority) questions everybody as supposed

of lie about sometime.

- And if you increase your body's anxiety trying to(during) control questions by biting town your tounes

for example. You can use the incresing xxx actions to fool the lie detector machine. (And if you increase

your body's anxiety during the control questions -- by biting down on your tongue, for example- you can use

these increased reactions to fool the lie-detector machine)

- Geoge xxxx runs a website opposing a polygraph testing. Here is talking about the dangerous of using lie

detector machines. How does he descrbe polygraph testing?

- This methodoloty(methodology) for detecting lies has no grounding in scientific method, it is completes

unscience. (It's complete junk science.)

- So he says the lie detectors and polygraphs are junk science. Junk is an American expression meaning

rubbish or something that must be thrown away. So junk science is theory that can't be justified through

science experiments.

- He also says that it has no grounding in scientific method. This means it has no basis or fundation

(foundation)  in science.

- Of course not all lies have bad intentions. You are good to be telling white lie for example.(You could

be telling a white lie, for example) Could you tell me what I mean Kate?(Could you tell me what that means

Kate?)

- Sure. A white a lie is a lie in might tell to make someone to feel good. (A white lie is a lie you might

tell to make someone feel good.)If you tell someone that they lost way(weight) for example even when they

haven't.

- A lot of white lies are type of flattery. That is a compliment or prase(praise) which in some cases may

be excessive or insincere.

- OK. We really has less time(OK, well we've nearly out of time), so let's go over some vocabulary we've

come across today.
First of all we had
deception
structured
motivated
lie detector or polygraph
junk
junk science
grounding
white lie
flattery

- And let's go back to today's question I asked you Kate which profession admits to lie(lying) the most?

- and straight (way) I went for C politicians but I feel I may be wrong.

- Yes. You're wrong this ketching.(Yeah you're wrong on this occasion). Actually it's teachers as want to

mist lying most.(Actually it's teachers are the ones admit to lying the most)

- Teachers? God sure suprises xxxxx. (Teachers? Gosh that surprises me. I didn't think teachers were the

lying type.)

- You woundn't thought it but maybe if they have to xxxxxxxx
(You wouldn't have thought so, but maybe if they have to manipulate someone, if they want to get a certain

response out of a pupil, then they will change their questions in a lying manner)

- Oh that's very interesting and I make sure I'll remember that next time I punpen xx to (bump into)a

teacher.

- Well. That's all we have time for BBCLIEARNINGENGLSH. SO thanks very much for listening. Goodbye.

- Goodbye.
