This is 6 minutes English from bbclearningenglish.com.

- Hello and welcome to 6 minutes English from bbclearningenglish. I'm Damos Chirismas(Dan Walker Smith) and in today's program Kate and I are going to be talking about parkour. Do you know parkour is Kate? (Do you know what parkour is Kate?)

- Hi, Dan. Well I don't know really never parkour is.(I don't really know what parkour is,) but I've a good feeling is something to do with jumping or enough buildings. Am I right?(but I've got a feeling it has something to do with jumping on and off buildings. Am I right?)

- That's pretty much darkly.(That's pretty much it actually). And parkour is a growing sport and make (mixes) running, jumping, climbing and gynmastics(gymnastics). And you must see on TV it's been around and
you see people running a ball(running up walls), climbing accross buildings and jumping over object that in my(their) way.

- Oh right. Yes now I know what you're talking about. I definitely see people doing this on the TV.

- Exactly. and what's interesting is (that) it's not compatitve(competitive). Many of the runners don't even like idea of comemertial events. They draw and keep it as a pure sport, not just a fun.(they'd rather keep it as a pure sport that's just for fun.) Have you seen that (Having said that) there're a parkour world championships? So my question for you Kate, in which city is hosting parkour world champtionships
this year?

Is it
A. 维也纳(Vienna)
B. Vancular(Vancouver)
C. venis(venice)

- Well, I've no idea, so I'm going to guess. B. vacular(Vancouver)

- Well, we'll see if you're right at the end of the show. Now we're going to hear an extract from the Braitish parkour runner Brand Morse.  Here (he) is talking about what he likes about this sport. He says because it's not compatitive(competitive) or professional, you can concentrate on personl development So he is less concern about been sponsored. Kate, what does it mean here?

- Oh, well, to sponsor in this context is to give someone money or(in) exchange for advertiseing and probalicity(publicity). So sports man and sports team are often sponsored by big companies.

- Ok, well. Let's have a listen to Brand. What other sport did he practice before he took part in(took up) parkour?

- Parkour give me a relopchinity to develop personally disport. xxxxxxxxxxxxx

- OK. So Brand was a skateborder(skateboard)before become(becoming) a parkour runner. Skatebords is a short bords with 4 small wheels in each corner and people write them accords skatebords.(and people who ride on them are called skateboarers).

- Yes. I think there're lots of similiarities between parkour and skatebording. Forexample you've got to
be very aware of your surroundings and it's awave getting around does a really quick and very impressive to

watch.(and it's a way of getting around that's really quick and very impressive to watch).

- Exactly I totally agree. Let's hear front again and xxxxxxxxxx to practice parkour.(Let's hear from Brad

again, as he talks about his favourite sort of areas to practise parkour.) He uses the word dense. So

what's dense, Kate? (So what's he saying here Kate?)

- Well, the word dense means to be made up of or containing a lot of things. So if an area is dense with

people for example, then there are a lot of people in that area.

- OK. Let's listen to the tape and say if you can sport the way with Brand gets around objects.(OK. Let's

listen to the clip, and see if you can spot the ways that Brad gets around objects.)

- I enjoy the spaces with a lot of dense things where I can move . (I enjoy spaces where there's lots of

dense things and where I can move.) in your go and I over between wave of moving challenge me dirctly. I do

enjoying developing creative movement but not the things of doing stuson acrobsic. (I enjoy spaces where

there's lots of dense things and where I can move. You know, go under, over, between; ways of moving that

challenge me directly. I do enjoy developing creative movement, but not the extent of doing stunts and

acrobatics.)

- So using parkour brancks under, over, and between objecs next ports.(So using parkour Brad goes under,

over and between the objects in his path.) But he said he doesn't do many stunds and acrocbics. What does

these words mean Kate?

- Well, a stunt is a dangerous action which might do (to) entertain someone. So there're lots of stunts in

action films for example. And acrobatics is another word for gymnastics. it's using your body to make

skillful movement and (with) lots of jumps and twists.

- parkour, the uses a lot of stuts and acrobcs is no  less free running.(Parkour that uses lots of stunts

and acrobatics is know as free running.) Let's listen now to a British free runner talking about her first

experience of the sport. Does(There's) a couple of interesting words here Kate so I was wondering if you

wouldn't mind to explain them?

- Sure. No problem.

- OK. What does she mean when she descrips her first class as insane.

- OK. Well, insane usually means mad or creazy. But what you problily(but what she probably)  means here is

that the first class is very hard and never(there were) lots of ridiculous moves.

- Ah and she also says there was positive atmosphere. What does she mean? Kate.

- Well. Atmosphere here is a feeling that a place gives you. Said when she says there was a positive

atmosphere she means that was a good feeling in the class.

- OK. Let's listen to her talking about her first experience of free running. What effect did class haven't

her?(What effect did the class have on her?)

- I had an insane first class where last for(in the) 10 minutes. We were just looking in each other again.

Oh my god. It is impossible like us to do it .(We were just looking at each other going 'Oh my God this is

impossible, they can't expect us to do this")But it is fun and it was really positive xxx(atmosphere). I

just got hooked.

- She said she was hooked of her first class. Hooked is an informal word meaning addicted. People usually

talk about been hooked on drugs or on cigerettes(cigarettes). But here she says she was hooked on free

running.
Does free running or parkour sound like you tryk it? (Does free running or parkour sould like something

you'd like to try Kate?)

- Oh I'm afraid not I'm not good with hike (heights). xxx watch. now on. (I think I'll just watch from now

on.)

- Well. Maybe you get convinced one day. But for the moments we're almost at end of time.(we're almost out

of time.)  So let's go over some vacabulary(vocabulary). We come accross the day.  (we've come across

today)
First of all, we had
parkour
to sponsor
a skateboot
dense
stunts
acrobotics
insane
atmosphere
hooked

And I also(asked) you at the  beginning of the show Kate. Which city is hosting this year's parkour world

champtionships?

- I'd like to take a wild guess B vancuvor.

- Actually the answer is 维也纳(Vienna). Although it's the world champtionships a lot of parkour community

rushed (a lot of parkour community are actually) against this world compitation.(although it's the world

championships, a lot of the parkour community are actually against this soft of competition.) They want to

keep parkour pure and non-compesive(non-competitive) and I say they are dead bring  in competation. It's

goning to make quite commercal when the people only need money. (and they see the idea that bringing in a

competition is going to make it quite commercial and that people will only do it for money.)

- Yes. I consider the point. (Yes I can see their point). they haven't competation doesn't mean more people

get know about it. (But then having a competition does mean that more people get to know about it).

- Exactly. And if you're in 维也纳 this year you may want to check it out. But from all of us here at

BBClearning English. Thanks so much for deep listening. Goodbye.

- Goodbye.
