1. Student loans promoted:
China will promote locally-granted student loans across the nation when the new school semester starts in September. The new policy allows poverty-stricken students to apply for special loans at their hometown before they enter college. An individual student will be granted a maximum of RMB6000 for each year to cover their tuition and accommodation fees.
2. Cop-killer Yang faces trial:
Beijing man Yang Jia, 28, who allegedly stabbed 6 policemen to death and injured another 4 in a knife attack in Shanghai on July 1, stood trial Tuesday charged with premeditated murder. The No.2 division of the shanghai Municipal People's Procuratorate declared Yang guilty of premeditated murder on July 17.
3.Shanxi to build railway:
Shanxi, together with Henan and shandong, is planning to invest hundreds of billions yuan to build a freight-only railway across the 3 provinces, providing coal for the industrial centers along the line to promote economic development, Li Ting, an official from Shanxi said when interviewed by National Business Daily Monday. The plan will be handed up to the National Development and Reform commission.
4. Thai PM calls for calm:
Thai PM Samak Sundaravej issued an ultimatum to anti-government protesters led by the People's Alliance for Democracy, calling on them to retreat as soon as possible or "they would be brought to justice." Tuesday, the protesters broke into the Government House compound, seized a state-run TV station, and blocked main roads.
5. Russia recognizes regions:
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev Tuesday signed decrees on the recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, 2 breakaway regions of Georgia. In his televised address,Medvedev called on other countries to follow Russia's example.
6. Chinese girl a hit on iPhone:
An "iPhone girl" is hot worldwide since her photos appeared on a popular forum for fans of Apple products. Markm49uk, a British user who posted the photos, said when he unboxed his iPhone he found photos of the Chinese girl(see photo). An official from Foxconn's factory, which assembles most of Apple's iPhones, told the Modern Express that the girl was one of its employees and that it was likely the photos were left in the phone's memory.
7. NK develops new noodle:
North Korean scientist have developed a new kind of noodle that delays feelings of hunger, according to Japanese media. The noodle is made by mixing soybean with corn and has almost twice the protein and 5 times more fat than normal noodles. The newspaper said the noodles would be available soon across North Korea.
8. Star named worst guests:
A famous travel website released a "worst guest list", saying Britney Spears was "a notorious slob" and her room was "trashed". Elsewhere Mariah Carey required "all toilet seats be replaced with brand-new ones" and "mineral water for her own bath as well as her dog's". Nicole Kidman (see photo) is also said to give "pages of diagrams and instructions for makeing up her bed".
9. UK butterfly levels plunge:
Butterflies in the UK may be at their lowest ever summer level due to weather conditions last year, conservation experts warned Monday. An expert said heavy rains and strong winds may wash off butterflies' eggs and young caterpillars.
