Meanwhile, nine prominent universities, including Beida and Tsinghua, formed an "alliance" this June to recommend postgrad candidates to each other. "It's more difficult for students like me who don't have a privileged university background," said Chen Xiao, a fourth year environmental engineering major at Shandong University of Science and Technology. Chen's dream school is Tsinghua. "Anyway, I'm going to fight for this," he said. But does he know what he's fighting for?
Free graduate school education will gradually be replaced by a "comprehensive financial aid system". In that system, some will have to pay tuition. And tuition, for example in architecture at Tsinghua, can be 16,000 yuan a year.
"Doing postgrad study is a big investment of money and time. You have to think twice," said a women named Xu, in the grad recruitment office of China University of Political Science and Law.
