Nonetheless, the Ministry of Education figures show that going to grad school is not just for a minority. In 2007, over 1.28 million university grads took the exam, accounting for 56 percent of the graduating students. The increase from 2006 to 2007 was trivial (a few thousand more) when compared with the 2005 to 2006 shift. By 2006, it was up 20 percent.
Does this mean that enthusiasm for grad school has waned in the last year?
According to a China Campus magazine report, "More students were recommended as postgrads and were exempt from the national exam." In 2008, Peking University plans to have 7 percent more of these candidates. "In science departments, they will account for anywhere from 20 to 80 percent. The figure in other departments won't be below 50 percent," said a man named Wei, of the school's postgrad recruitment office.
