However, some see nothing wrong with a system that's looking to encourage social engagement.
"The system is called a 'comprehensive evaluation system'. It doesn't just exist for academic purposes," said Zhou Huan, a junior at Beijing Foreign Studies University. He doesn't think the system 'favors' student leaders like him."
Criticism for the system, however, doesn't just focus on its comprehensive approach. Some complain that, at some universities, the awarding of "bonus points" allows for favoritism and bias.
"It was not very transparent," said Li. "Every time, we were given a final evaluation of each applicant, there were never any details about how the bonus points were calculated."
