I met Peter on my trip to Yunnan. Peter was my friend's brother-in-law and we were traveling together.
He was deeply impressed when he saw what I did for him and my friends when they got ill during the long journey. He kept talking with me and looking me in the eyes. I just considered some kind of friendliness.
On the way to Lugu Lake, the tour guide told us some customs of the local people. A man and a woman in love neven get married. The man can only visit the woman's house at night and should leave in the morning. They cannot hold hands in public as we do.
Peter told me that a couple in love would hold hands in his country and asked if he could he could hold my hand. I said no, feeling a little embarrassed. We were not even close friends. He was only in China for his vacation and would leave two or three weeks later. Though he had told me much about himself and his family and had said he would come to China for work and would find a Chinese girl for his wife, I didn't want to be just for fun. Actually I thought he was a bit impudent.
