SAS ranked 20th on “Best Companies to Work For” list

SAS continues to stand out as the best of the best for its benefits, culture and stability – even in a tough economy

For the 12th consecutive year, SAS is ranked near the top of FORTUNE’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list.  SAS placed 20th this year – rising nine spots from the year before.  In addition to the overall ranking, SAS was listed as one of the best companies for healthcare, childcare and work-life balance, ranking 5th for “Best Benefits” and No. 1 in "Best Benefits: Work/Life Balance."

How are the 100 Best chosen?

Most of a company’s score (two-thirds) is based on the results of a survey created by the Great Place to Work Institute, which is sent to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees from each company. This year, more than 81,000 employees from 353 companies responded to the 57-question survey. The other third of the scoring is based on the company’s responses to the Institute’s Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communications, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts.

As Vice President of Human Resources Jenn Mann explained, a large portion of the FORTUNE ranking is determined based on employee responses to a survey by The Great Place to Work® Institute.  (See sidebar, “How are the 100 Best chosen?”)

“It’s no surprise that our scores are higher than most 100 Best Companies," Mann said. "The survey scores each organization in the areas of credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.  These are all areas on which our company values are founded.  In our own company survey, conducted in 2008,  employees strongly agreed that SAS is run on strong values and principles.”

The No. 1 spot on this year’s list went to NetApp, followed by Edward Jones (No. 2) and Boston Consulting Group (No. 3).  The list and related stories will appear in the Feb. 2 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands Monday, Jan. 26 or now on .
