Since the month long competition opened in Brazil, legions of  Chinese sports fans have been gathering for viewing parties in their living rooms, in factory and school dormitories, and in restaurants and bars, many of which have opened late for the fans to watch matches live on Chinese television. Of course, not all of these sleep deprived folks are bona fide football fans. A posting on Baidu, China's largest search engine, noted that the Chinese have recently coined the word "wei qiumi, " or "fake soccer fans, " referring to people who watch the game only once in a while, who care more about the final scores rather than enjoying the actual games, and who think celebrity players play a more important role in matches than the coaches.

Defending champion Spain, the dominant global football power for the past six years, was eliminated from World Cup contention Wednesday with a 2 0 loss to Chile. Spain have become only the fifth defending champions in history to go out in the group stage, but the first the lose their opening two games and thereby the quickest to ever go home. They are also the first team eliminated from the 2014 tournament. Chile, as they promised before the game, have made history. The oddity was that Spain had at that point had more than enough chances to win the game well. The reality was that they didn’t deserve to. The South Americans also consigned Spanish dominance to the past with a display that brilliantly outpaced their famous philosophy and made it look brutally outdated.

Spain have fallen from their perch. One of the greatest sides of all time have suffered one of the most dismal endings. An English tabloid reported the sinking of Spain with a self mockery title ‘world champions are out BEFORE England ’. A Chinese football fan has reportedly died after staying up on successive nights to watch the World Cup. The 25 year old man from Suzhou, near Shanghai, was found in front of his TV hours after the Netherlands beat Spain 5 1 in their first round game on Friday, which finished at around 5am Chinese time, and doctors said his  death could have been caused by sleep deprivation.
