After a fiveday strike that has ruined travel plans for thousands of passengers, Spirit Airlines and its pilots have settled their labor dispute. Flights will resume Friday, according to an update posted on the carrier's website.
"We have a tentative agreement," said Art Luby, assistant director of representation for the Air Line Pilots Association. The agreement is subject to a backtowork agreement, final language, and union membership approval.
Spirit Airlines spokeswoman could not immediately be reached for comment. On its website, Spirit said it would offer $50 discounts for new bookings made by midnight on June 18, and offer 5,000 bonus miles towards frequent flier rewards. Taxes and fees are extra.
The Miramarbased airline is the largest operator at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, carrying about one in five passengers. Spirit accounts for 41 percent of the international traffic, providing exclusive service to 14 international routes in Latin America and the Caribbean.
At Palm Beach International Airport, Spirit flies seasonally and represents about 1 percent of the total yearround operations. Spirit does not serve Miami International Airport.
Over the past several years, Spirit has added numerous international destinations, making it a prime contributor to rapid growth at Broward's international airport.
Broward airport traffic was down 9.5 percent in 2009 to 20,940,740 total passengers. Without Spirit, traffic would have fallen 26.6 percent to 16,967,309 total passengers. Fort Lauderdale airport leaders were working Monday to access the potential losses as a result of the strike.
