Lopez requested a temporary restraining order against Sullivan on Oct. 18, which a judge granted, court records show. that day in violation of the restraining order, Henry said.
Sullivan's father said his son was angry about the restraining order, and he'd tried to counsel him against going over to the house.
talked the day before and I told him to stay away from there, he'd just got this (new) job, said Ernie Sullivan, 68, of Richmond. sorry he went over there. I don't know why. and left before deputies arrived. Three hours later, a call to 911 from the house brought deputies back to the area. Sullivan had returned but was backing out of the driveway in a 1995 Nissan Altima as deputies arrived, Henry said.
Sullivan refused to get out of the car and was confrontational, sheriff's officials said. Deputies spent 30 minutes trying to negotiate with Sullivan to get out of the car, Henry said. He was blocked in by one patrol car at the rear and 10 in front.
The deputies deployed a stun gun through the open driver's side window, but the shot didn't subdue him, Henry said. They broke the passenger window with a baton and were about to send in a police dog when Sullivan hit the gas pedal and sped forward, Henry said.
Sullivan drove past one car and rammed the Altima into the next patrol vehicle, prompting the deputies and CHP officer to open fire. They initially thought he had hit a deputy, which wasn't the case, Henry said.
The deputies and officer continued firing until the car came to a stop and a police dog helped them get Sullivan out of the car.
The Press Democrat had previously reported that police paint indicated that 42 shots may have been fired, but the numbers represented shell casings and other evidence, Henry said. About 30 shots were fired, Henry said.

The two fatal bullets struck Sullivan from the back and entered his chest cavity, Coroner's Sgt. Clint Shubel said. Sullivan was struck by nine additional bullets in his upper torso, arms and buttocks, Shubel said.
Paramedics transported Sullivan to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where he later died, Shubel said.
Coroner's officials were waiting for the results from toxicology tests to release an official cause of death and determine whether Sullivan was on narcotics at the time, as some witnesses have speculated, Henry said.
Henry said Sullivan was a gang member, warranting extra caution and time before officials release the names of the officer and deputies involved.
A judge in 2005 instructed Sullivan to stay away from gang members and refrain from wearing gang attire or colors when Sullivan was convicted of knowingly receiving stolen property, court records show.
Sullivan's record includes misdemeanor convictions for theft, marijuana and weapons charges.
In 2007, Sullivan was convicted of stealing a car in Nevada and served his sentence in jail and a Nevada state prison from February 2007 to April 2008, Nevada Department of Corrections staff said.
