Former Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Manny Delcarmen donated $15,000 to the Boston Public Schools for library and athletics upgrades during Saturday Double Dutch Tournament at Mildred Avenue School in Mattapan. Superintendent Carol R. Johnson accepted the check along with School Committee member Alfreda Harris and BPS Athletics Director Ken Still.
Delcarmen, a graduate of the former West Roxbury High School, raised a total of $15,000 through his Strikes for Schools presented by New Balance charity bowling tournaments. This is the fourth year he has donated all of the funds raised to the BPS.

The Athletics Department plans to upgrade equipment and fulfill requests from schools to enhance sporting programs across the city.

Driven by the desire to provide more opportunities for middle school girls to participate in sports, a group of people, including Darlene Knight of the Boston Public Schools, Chris Lynch of the Boston Youth Sports Initiative, Whitney Post of the Women Sports Foundation GoGirlGo Program, Judy Lockhart of the Red Auerbach Youth Foundation, Linda Driscoll of Dream Big!, Pat Arcand of the Play Ball! Foundation and Caitlin Geddes of Northeastern Sport in Society created The Jump Boston! Team.
