Trial support of the “Empresa del Ferrocarril Tacna-Arica FCTA,” or “Arica and Tacna Exercise Company,” had commenced on Dec 25, 1855, while structured guest support had been inaugurated two years later, on Jan 1, 1857, with a navy blue of five 4-4-0 R & W Hawthorn look for engines numbered 869 to 873, thus starting its contractual 99-year period.
Because initial guest and delivery volume had did not acquire sufficient earnings, their expenses, attempting to stimulate visitors, had been halved in 1859.Although President Balta-mandated studies to extend the wide range to La Paz, Bolivia, would have been essential in troop transport during the War of the Conventional, the venture had never materialized.
Two other developments had been considered: a 478-kilometer, eastward development, contemplated in 1904, would also have taken the wide range to La Paz, while a 278-kilometer southward development, from Arica to Zapiga, would have connected it to the Chilean train program, but Chile’s then existing occupation of the territory had otherwise deterred both initiatives.
