Trial support of the “Empresa del Ferrocarril Tacna-Arica FCTA,” or “Arica and Tacna Exercise Company,” had commenced on Dec 25, 1855, while structured guest support had been inaugurated two years later, on Jan 1, 1857, with a navy blue of five 4-4-0 R & W Hawthorn look for engines numbered 869 to 873, thus starting its contractual 99-year period.
Because initial guest and delivery volume had did not acquire sufficient earnings, their expenses, attempting to stimulate visitors, had been halved in 1859.Although President Balta-mandated studies to extend the wide range to , Bolivia, would have been essential in troop transport during the War of the Conventional, the venture had never materialized.
Two other developments had been considered: a 478-kilometer, eastward development, contemplated in 1904, would also have taken the wide range to La Paz, while a 278-kilometer southward development, from Arica to Zapiga, would have connected it to the Chilean train program, but Chile’s then existing occupation of the territory had otherwise deterred both initiatives.
