As the architect of Labour's forthcoming General Election campaign, Lord Mandelson will inevitably focus on the 'privileged' backgrounds of his Conservative opponents.

But now he himself has become the proud owner of the ultimate status symbol of the landed gentry a pair of upmarket green wellington boots.

The revelation comes days after the Business Secretary attended a shooting party on the country estate of billionaire Lord Rothschild with Colonel Gaddafi's son Saif infuriating families of the Lockerbie bombing victims.

Last night Mr Harris said: 'The boots were a present when Peter had a surprise birthday party last month. I've had a pair for nearly ten years and they're still going strong.'

The bespoke green rubber boots, which have been supplied to the landed gentry since the Twenties, have a snap fastening and a gusset, which the manufacturers claim 'allows easy entry and a snug fit around the calf'.

The boots have a 2mm blue Neoprene lining designed to insulate against the cold and offer superior comfort.

Roxtons, of Hungerford, Berkshire, where Mr Harris bought the wellies, has an exclusive clientele, including King Carl Gustav of Sweden and Stefan Persson, billionaire owner of the H fashion chain.

Mr Harris added: 'It turned out I had bought a pair of size 10s, a size too big, and Peter brought them down when we had lunch one day and we changed them at the shop for 9s.'

Lord Mandelson is understood to be a regular visitor at Mr Harris's 1 million six bedroom former Victorian vicarage nearby.

It is not the first time Lord Mandelson has been spotted with top class goods. At Labour's annual conference in September, he was seen wearing a 21,500 designer Patek Philippe Swiss wristwatch, given to him as a present.

In 2004, six weeks after taking office as EU Trade Commissioner, he spent New Year's Eve on board a yacht owned by Microsoft's co founder Paul Allen.

And last summer, he spent time on Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska's yacht off Corfu and had dinner with Lord Rothschild and his son Nat at their villa on the Greek island.

He also stayed at the financier's ski chalet at Klosters , Switzerland last Christmas.

Lord Mandelson is facing calls for a fresh inquiry into his links with Mr Deripaska. A German MEP has demanded that the European Commission investigates claims that the Business Secretary twice lowered aluminium tariffs while he was EU Trade Commissioner.

Christian Democrat MEP Dr Ingeborg Graessle says this directly benefited Mr Deripaska, whose company, Rusal, is the world's biggest aluminium concern.

A spokesman for Lord Mandelson last night declined to comment.
