massive amounts of unneeded plastic
As the mother of two young daughters, Spencer, a Southern California resident, became concerned that her laundry detergent and stain removal spray were harmful to her children’s health. When Spencer engaged in her own research, she was shocked to read about the potential health and environmental hazards in many laundry products, and the eco-friendly offerings in retail stores failed to meet her standards.
“Rashes, respiratory problems, massive amounts of unneeded plastic,” Spencer says, listing her concerns. “I decided I was not going to compromise my kids’ safety or the environment like that, so I started developing detergent myself.”
Though she made great progress, logistical problems slowed Spencer’s progress and eventually forced her to table her efforts for several years. In 2008, after having launched a number of successful health and fitness related companies, she decided to revive the project and enlisted several organic chemists to help her finalize her formula and created a nontoxic powder detergent containing naturally derived ingredients, with a unique dissolvable “pod” delivery method for easy use. Conveniently, the pods fit into a lightweight sealable pouch, saving up to 98% plastic waste compared to a big jug, according to MaddieBrit Products.
