Recent thunderstorms have also been a point of concern for the town, and they have used the poly and canvas tarps to cover equipment and other things to prevent the soil from moving and the hole from becoming worse. The engineers are working against damage and increasingly bad weather to get this under control and repaired before winter sets in and makes the task harder, if not impossible to correct. A simple tarp enabled many to prevent more damage.
The roadway is along the Hudson River, causing additional concerns to the topsoil erosion and structural rot. The town has contracted firms to draw up proposals for repairs and the drawings will be passed along to contractors so that the town can get a total price for the repairs and a time line on when this would be completed. The need for tarps was immediate.A spokesperson for the tarp company stated, "Dealing with emergencies is our main business so we know have to get the tarps here fast."
Haiti and New Orleans saw similar uses for tarps during their disasters. Many pieces of equipment and areas that were being worked on used the tarps to protect the areas that were being repaired. So far, the use of these has allows businesses to remain open along the road and they are doing their job in slowing down the sinkhole from becoming worse.
