Five contractors bid for the right to tear down the rundown fence that stands between Saugus High School and Route 1 and replace it with a sound barrier. All five bids came in above the $80,000 Town Meeting members authorized to borrow for the project, with the low bid at $117,000.
Concerned the composite sound barrier would cost more than the bond allowed, Town Manager Andrew Bisignani also put out a bid to erect a chain link fence. The low bid was $63,700, which the town could afford with room to spare.
After the bids came in Bisignani communicated the results to the School Committee to get input on how to proceed.
