Federal workplace safety officials on Tuesday began investigating the collapse of a pavilion under construction at Bob Hall Pier as project engineers scrutinized the clamps that were supposed to support the structure.
About 10 workers were pouring a concrete platform atop the pilings of the gulfside pavilion when it collapsed Monday. None were injured."It could have been a bad situation and I'm not happy with it," said John Michael, project engineer for Naismith Engineering.
Companies are required to report workplace accidents to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration only in cases of multiple injuries or death. Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Todd said the agency decided on its own to look into the pavilion collapse.
Mark Trinidad, president of 3TI Inc., the lead construction contractor on the project, said
songjia engineers blame the collapse on a failed friction clamp.
