For two years, he lived under an abandoned semi-trailer in the city's south end, where he kept dry using tarps and the shelter of the old truck. His days were filled with the constant search for drugs, food and warm clothes.
To keep dry, he stashed bags of clothes around the city, changing into new ones when he became too drenched. He says being wet and cold was far worse than spending a night in the snow.
For Nanaimo's homeless population, January's rain can be more brutal than the snow. Wet weather brings a host of health problems to those who can't or won't go inside to warm up and dry off.
