Opposing view: A win for everybody
We have all seen how carry-on baggage is out of control.
Softgels Longer security and boarding lines, injuries from overcrowded overhead bins, delayed flights and passenger frustration have become commonplace.
We always look for ways to save customers money and improve their experience. Our decision to charge fees for carry-on bags relieves the carry-on crisis, smooths out the boarding process and reduces delays — all for the same total price or less.
Our solution includes lowering fares further; lowering the fees for checked baggage; allowing one free personal item on board and charging for an additional carry-on bag. Those who pay for a carry-on will also get priority boarding.
The new system will be a win for every passenger because we expect:
Lower total prices.
Faster security lines.
A smoother boarding process.
Faster deplaning.
Improved passenger safety because of fewer overstuffed bins.
Why not allow free checked bags instead? Because it would be unfair to the 50% of our customers who don't check bags. Why should we raise their fares so that everyone's fare includes a checked bag?
In our free-market system, consumers are free to make their own choices. Spirit is all about giving customers options to choose what they want to pay for, without subsidizing the choices of others. Telling Spirit we shouldn't give customers options is like telling McDonald's that they can't sell just a burger and that all customers must buy fries and a soft drink, too. Not everyone wants fries; why should everyone have to pay for them?
Our customers are getting it. They see the value in Spirit's solution to the carry-on bag crisis, as evidenced by our soaring sales since our announcement.
The people who are upset are the ones accustomed to paying $1,000 per ticket on other airlines. They fear their airline will follow suit and tack a new fee onto already high fares.
Softgels We share their frustration and think some airline prices are outrageous. We invite these fliers to try our low fares with frills for a fee. They will see how their total price will go down while enjoying a great experience!
