Tips & Warnings
  • A stick shift has the tendency to roll on his and any slightly sloped area.
  • When you have to slow down, you will need to down shift (shift down a gear)This will slow you down and adjust your speed.
  • When stopping, press clutch and brake simultaneously. (When you become a pro, you will learn how to press the break first, then know when to press the clutch)
  • When turning (for example in your driveway), down shift to 2nd gear (this will give you enough speed to enter the driveway)
  • When downshifting be sure your speed corresponds to the gear (For example, in 2nd gear, you should not be driving at 40 mph. Your should be driving in a lower speed like 30 mph)
  • If you have to stop on a hill, take car out of gear and press brake to keep from rolling back. (Once you become a pro you can use the clutch and gas to rock back and forth to keep automobile from rolling)
  • In bad weather, it is better to drive in a lower gear to help adjust your speed comfortably.
  • Holding your clutch down unnecessarily or for long periods of time can cause your clutch to wear out.
  • Skipping gears can ruin your transmission.
  • Releasing the clutch too fast can cause your automobile to choke off (dangerous in traffic)
  • You may at times think that you are in 3rd gear, but may be in 5th gear (for example). (You will know by the way the car sounds and drives. It will not pick up speed as it should if it's in a higher gear than it should be for the speed you are driving)
