If you're like many people, you've probably read of the many ways
you need to prepare for a job interview. You've probably heard about
how to dress, what to bring, and how to act. While all of these things
are important, it is equally important for you to pay attention to your
English.
When you talk to someone that uses poor English, the first thought that
probably comes to your mind is that this person is unintelligent. Would
you hire this person for a job? The answer to this question is probably
no. If someone doesn't speak in an intelligent manner, it is very
likely that they are unintelligent, or uneducated. While this may not
be the case, people will almost always judge you first by the way you
look, and then by the things you say. When you go to a job interview,
you can't be lacking in either area. The first step in preparing for
your job interview is to practice speaking. Think about the common
questions that are asked during the interview, and come up with answers
in advance.
Waiting until you get to the interview is too late. If you haven't
thought about what you will say in advance, you've already put yourself
at a disadvantage. While it is impossible for you to know all the
questions that you will be asked during the interview, being prepared
for common questions will give you the advantage. Some of the questions
that you will be asked during the interview includes: Where do you see
yourself in five years? Why do you want to work for us? What separates
you from the other people who are applying for this job?
If you've been to more than one job interview, you should already have
a good idea of the questions that you will be asked. Giving the best
answers to these questions will separate you from the other people who
are applying for the position. You should write down all these
questions in advance, and you should prepare answers for them. Practice
giving these responses in the days leading up to the interview. During
the interview, and it is crucial for you to make sure your responses
don't sound scripted. If they sound scripted, this will leave a bad
impression on the interviewer, who will think that you're not genuine.
While you will want to use the best English possible during the
interview, you should only use big words if they flow naturally, and if
they make sense. There is nothing more embarrasing than to use a fancy
word out of context, or to use it in a way that doesn't make sense. If
you make this mistake during the job interview, you will make it appear
as if you are trying too hard, and you may also make yourself look
foolish. If you don't know how to use a word in its proper context, it
is best for you to avoid using the word. Using a fancy word in the
wrong context is no different than using poor grammar. All roads lead
to the same destination.
In addition to using fancy words, you must
also know when to speak, and how to speak. Never interrupt the person
that is interviewing you. This will be seen as rude and inconsiderate.
When you speak, don't speak too loudly, but avoid speaking too low. It
is always bad when the interviewer has to ask you to speak up. You will
come across as being timid, and most employers don't want timid
employees. It is also important for you to pause when you speak. This
will allow you to emphasize important points. Speaking too fast can
confuse the interviewer, and speaking too slowly will make them think
you're slow. Your job interview is the moment where you will want to shine. You
can't afford to make mistakes in your English. Prepar for the questions
in advance, and you should do well. Conclusion
