11:22 PM Mulyadi: hi steven
let me guess, we met on kernelnewbies? :D
11:23 PM me: Hi :) yes, I 'm in kernelnewbies mail list :)
Mulyadi: already guess :D
heheheheh
11:24 PM i have so many unknown friend in my gtalk list :D
and most of them are from kernelnewbies :D
hehehehehehhe
but it's ok, the more the merrier :D
me: So do I. But we have same interest:)
Mulyadi: yeah, that's why I am fine with it
11:25 PM so, how are you today steven?
where do you live?
me: I'm fine:) How about you?
I live in China. I guess you are an Indian, are you?
Mulyadi: nope, I am Indonesian
but I have chinese blood
11:26 PM me: Really? Can you speak Chinese? hehe
Mulyadi: nope...well i know few hokkian idioms, but that's all
11:27 PM me: hokkian? what does that mean? My english is too poor to catch your meaning...I'm sorry
11:28 PM Mulyadi: well, my ancestor call it hokkian....it's a dialect
i don't know how to say it in original chinese term
11:29 PM me: OK, I got it:) It should be "Chengyu" in Chinese:)
Mulyadi: probably
11:30 PM me: What's the time in your area?
Mulyadi: now it's 10:28 PM
what time is it there?
me: It's almost the same as here. Now it's 23:30 pm.
11:31 PM Tommorow is a special day for me, for Chinese. Did you hear the big earthquake in China last year?
11:32 PM Mulyadi: ehm.....probably i missed that...oh wait...yes I read that
11:33 PM me: I remeber that Indonesia is a earquake-active contry?
11:35 PM Mulyadi: indeed
between 2004-2005...that was our worst years
11:36 PM almost every islands are shook
11:37 PM me: Yes I read from newspaper. Jave island , it that?
11:38 PM Mulyadi: not just java
sumatera
me: Tsunami and earthquake is happed frequently in your contry
Mulyadi: kalimantan
almost entire Indonesia
yup
11:39 PM me: Excuse me, English is the official language in Indonesia?
11:40 PM Your Engilsh is very good:)
11:41 PM Mulyadi: nope...but well, in some place, we use English
i still need more practice...i am somewhat learn it by doing
11:42 PM by writing articles and chat in IRC i mean :D
not an ideal place to practice :D :D
me: I've studied English for more than 10 years, but my English is still so poor :(
11:44 PM IRC, I have not used it yet. But I think it's a good place to communicate software skill with others
Mulyadi: anyway, may I know your profession now?
11:45 PM me: I'm a software development engineer. I worked in the home-gateway filed. How about you:)
11:46 PM Mulyadi: right now i am a freelance writer
and just starting linux training business
11:47 PM me: That a good occupation:)
11:49 PM Mulyadi: ok so we both are interested in kernel stuff...what's your specific interest, steven?
i try to focus on scheduling and network stack...
me: I'v studied linux kernel at free time for more than one year, but I'm still a newbie. Linux is very popular in Indonesia?
11:51 PM Mulyadi: Linux....I can say yes..as a alternative to propietary OSes like Windows or commercial UNIXes
11:52 PM me:
These days I have studied tcp/ip stack implementaion, but It's so
complicated about TCP protocol...but I think the ip level and bridge
level is much simpler:)
11:53 PM Mulyadi: following code path of tcp stack drives me crazy for sure :D
here jumps to there, there jumps to other...other jumps to only-god-knows-where...and so on :D
and suddenly my cscope tells me I already in 10+ deep :D
11:55 PM me: haha:) indeed. I have tried to read the code of TCP, but I found that's so complicated, So i gave up:<
11:56 PM Mulyadi: then I took a long sleep to calm down :D
11:57 PM me:
I studied scheduling from the book . I think this book is too old, it still describe O(1). I
konw in the latest kernel , the scheduling algrithom is replaced with
CFS
Mulyadi: yep
check henrik austad paper
and ACM sigops paper
11:58 PM i can not write you down the link...so try to google for it
in essence, it replace linked list with red black tree
and change the meaning of nice level
it's kinda no longer means "time slice"
11:59 PM but IMO...fairness of given time slice for all tasks
12:00 AM me:
yes , I have heard this from my friend, he has studied CFS very
careful. He wrote a lot of articles about Linux kernel, but using
Chinese. Are you interest in it?
Mulyadi: just in plain chinese? ehm...i don't think I can read it
12:01 AM me: yes , plain Chinese. If he have plan to translate his article into English, I'll notify you:)
12:02 AM Mulyadi: thanks for the offer, but I believe language is the main barrier here
me: I know a book named , there's a chaper talk about CFS. 12:03 AM chapter
Mulyadi: hm, i think so too
i plan to buy that book
me: in Amazon?
in China this book have not been shiped in
How about Indonesia?
12:04 AM Mulyadi: i check local bookstores...i found none
btw, any of your friends that studies computer forensics?
12:05 AM me: computer forensics? I'm sorry I did not heard that before:(
Mulyadi: uhum...that's ok
basically it's digging as many information as you can from computer
12:06 AM be it from disk, RAM, eeprom etc
most likely, to get evidence in the case of cyber crime or related cases
12:07 AM me: this technique is used by network policeman?
Mulyadi: i heard so
steven, i need to get a rest first
talk to you later
me: OK, nice talking to you:)
12:08 AM I have to sleep now. It's 00:00 in China. See you:)
