  13 Olympic gold medals are up for grabs on Auguest 11 with the Chinese team favorites in 4 events. The locals are going for gold in the men's synchronized 10m platform, the men's 10m air rifle shooting and the women's 62kg weightlifting events.
 
Athletes strive for peace:
  The women's 10m air pistol shooting silver medalist Paderina Natalia of Russia and bronze winner Nino Salukvadze of Georgia shared the podium Sunday, embraced and kissed each other, putting aside the conflict that has erupted between the 2 countries. "if the world were to draw any lessons from what I did there would never be any wars," Salukvadze said.
 
China challenge US 70-101
  After a brief lead in the first quarter, China failed to catch up to a faster American team, losing 70-101 in a men's basketball game full of expectations Sunday evening. China gave their all fighting to the end in a game watched over by US president George W.Bush and China's Foreighn Minister Yang Jiechi. It was the US' 5th Olympic victory over China dating back to 1984.
 
Belgium beat China 2-0
  Belgium beat a 9-man China 2-0 Sunday evening, making it difficult for the host nation to advance in the Olympic football tournament. Forward Moussa Dembele opened the scoring in the 8th minute, follwed by forward Kevin Mirallas who extended Belgium's lead in the 79th minute. For the home team defender Tan Wangsong and midfielder Zheng Zhi were red-carded in the 2nd half.
 
IOC upholds ban on athlete
  Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou has been barred from competing in the Beijing Games because of her involvement in a doping scandal 4 years ago, the IOC said Sunday. Thanou and compatriot Kostas Kenteris missed doping tests on the eve of the 2004 Games' opening ceremony, claiming they were injured in a motorcycle accident. The case brought the Olympic movement into disrepute, the IOC said.
 
Rain cools Beijing and Shanghai
  Beijing had moderate to heavy rain Sunday, which cooled the city down to about 26'C. Beijing will have more showers Monday, drizzle on August 15-16, and another round of moderate or heavy rain around August 19, the Beijing Meteorological Bureau said. Shanghai had thundershowers Sunday, Which brought the temperature down to 26-28'C. The rainy weather might last until August 15.
 
4 exposed to radiation in JP
  2 more people have been found to be suffering from radiation exposure at a nuclear fuel production plant in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, the company said recently, bringing the number of people exposed to radiation in the accident to 4. The day earlier 2 people were exposed to radiation in an accident involving a uranium solution leak at the plant.
 
Mum defends judo gold:
  Xian Dongmei defeated DPRK's An Kum Ae to successfully defend her Athens title in the women's 52kg class Sunday, becoming China's first judo athlete to defend a title and China's first 'Olympic champion mum'. The 33-year-old judo veteran retired after the Athens Olympics, formed a family and had a child. Last year she announced her come back for Beijing Olympics.
 
Post-90's athlete wins gold:
  Chinese Long Qingquan, born at the end of 1990 in Hunan, totaled 292kg to win the men's 56kg division weightlifting gold medal at the Olympic Games on Sunday evening, setting a new junior world record. Vietnam's Hoang anh Tuan took the silver and Indonesian Eko Yuli Irawan the bronze.
 
Sauna World Championship:
  The 10th Sauna World Championships was held in Finland Saturday, with 164 men and women from 23 countries and regions, including Canada, China and Germany participating. Finland man Bjarne Hermansson won the male championship by staying in a sauna heated to 110'c for 18 minutes and 15 seconds. The toughest woman was Leila Kulin also from Finland, taking the heat for 5 minutes and 21 seconds.
