Hi, I'm Raja Patel and I'm the product line manager for the Cisco 3800 Series Integrated Service Router which I'd like to show you in the next few minutes.
The 3800 series is designed to offer secure data, voice, video and application-optimization servies for small businesses and enterprise branch offices. I'll show you how the 3800 series support multiple hardware configurations that you can use in your network design.
The 3800 Series consist of two models: the 3825 and the 3845. I'm going to use this 3845 to demonstrate the different types of interface and service available. The 3800 Series has for hig-speed WAN Interface Cards, or HWIC slots that can be used to configure a variety of interfaces.
First, WAN interfaces such as th e serial, T1/E1, DSL, and ISDN interface Voice interfaces such as analog FXS, FXO adn digital T1/E1 are also supported.
LAN interfaces such as the Ethernet Switches and wireless LAN access points are also supported. The 3800 Series suppoorts a 9-port Ethernet switch HWIC that takes up two of the HWIC slots. In order to nstall this 9-port switch, you need to remove the divider in between the two HWIC slots, as demonstrated here, by first removing the current modules that are in the platform, then removing the divider that's in between the two slots and inserting the 9-port switch in its place.
The 3800 Series offers network module slots, which support high-speed WAN interfaces such as that T3/E3 and ATM OC-3 modules; high-density LAN interfaces up to a 48-port Ethernet switch; a 24-port is shown here; service modules such as wireless LAN controllers or WAN and application-optimization modules, such as the one shown here; high-density analog voice interfaces, such as this Extension Voice Module slot shown here.
The 3825 has two network module slots, while the 3845 has four. Network module slots support application serices, such as the module here. This modules has their own CPU, memory and disk so that they can offload tasks from the system CPU. Other examples of service modules include voicemail and autoattendant, intrusion-prevention system, and the network-analysis modules.
The 3800 Series supports three different widths of network modules: a standard width, such as shown here with a service module; an extended single-width which is shown with this 24-port switch; and an extended double-width, which is shown here with this 24-port plus stackwise switch.
The 3800 chassis has removable spaces and dividers that allow you to insert the extended-width network modules similar to the HWIC dividers that I showed you earlier.
The 3800 Series also has configurable hardware options available on the motherboard. The 3845 offers a removeble motherboard, which makes it easy to demonstrate these options. First, every platform has an intergrated VPN encryption chip built into it to allow you to build sercure VPN tunnels. Next, there are four PVDM packet voice DSP modules in order to support voice. These modules provide voice encoding, decoding, transcodingand conferencing support. The moderboard also has a built-in TDM switch,which allows you to transfer from the phsical interfaces to the DSPs.
The 3800 Series offers two advanced integration module or AIM slots. These slots support services that don't need to a physical connection, such as the Cisco Unity Express module that is shown here.
The 3800 Series offers three variations in power: AC, DC, and AC power with power-over-Ethernet support to power the Ethernet Switch ports. The 3845 supports internal redundant power supplies.
The 3800 Series is a very flexible platform for providing secure data, voice, video, and application-optimization Service to the network.
