is a great browser for many reasons, one of the largest reasons is because of its extensibility. Because of its popularity, extensions for everything under the sun have been created. This includes tons of extensions aimed at helping web developers. I have put together a list of some of the most useful extensions out there.
The DéjàClick extension may be one that you have never heard of. It is really a true gem. It allows you record actions that are done in your browser. This includes form inputs, url changes, and more. The set of actions is stored in a local file which can be executed using bookmarks. I have used these to save a set of actions to log into sites. They can also be used for testing websites. There are a thousand ways to use it.
Ever wanted to grab the color off of a webpage or look at the set of the colors for a page or site? ColorZilla makes this happen with ease. It includes many other features beyond picking colors.
IE Tab is really a pretty simple extension, it allows you to view a site using the Internet Explorer rendering engine installed on the computer inside of Firefox. That does, however, mean it is only available on Windows.
This extension is made to help with SEO. It can display the current Google PageRank, Alexa rank, Compete rank, and more for the current page. The extension also includes other tools like a keyword density analyzer.
There have been several times I have needed to test HTTP POST operations on the web with no way to go about it. Well, that is where Poster comes into play, it allows you to do a GET or POST to any site. You have the ability to set the content type, the body, and request parameters. You also get to view the results, of course.
Almost every developer has to deal with regular expressions from time to time and I for one never get it correct the first time. The Regular Expression Tester is exactly what the name says, a tool to test different regular expressions. It includes all the expression options and highlights matches.
The Dust-Me extension will examine a page or site to look for used selectors inside of the css for the page/site. It then provides a report of the data collected.
Ever used "Save for Web" in Photoshop? The smush.it extension is in the same vein. It will examine images on a page and determine if their size can be reduced. The service reduces size by eliminating unneeded metadata. Smush.it also includes a service to shrink the files.
This is an extension that every web developer should already have installed. But for the rest of you install this right away. The extension has countless features include measurement rulers, ability to easily view generated source, turn off css/javascript, validate html, and more and more. Seriously, you should already have this installed.
Just like the previous one, Firebug is an essential extension. It is the end all be all of debugging html, css, and javascript. It enables inspecting elements on a page and live javascript debugging. The list of features is really pretty endless. I think I can safely say that every professional web developer uses Firebug.
Firebug also has plugins, below are are some of my favorites.
The CodeBurner Firebug plugin is a simple but useful one, it exposes reference material for HTML and CSS.
FirePHP is a plugin that enables logging from PHP into the Firebug Console. To use this plugin you need to have a .
The YSlow plugin examines web pages and determines why they are slow. It uses a set of rules created by Yahoo.
This plugin is basically a cookie manager. It allows you to create and delete cookies. You can also view the cookies for a site. If you like cookies, this is the plugin for you.
That is pretty much it. There are a lot of other extensions out there, I would love hear of any that you particularly like, just leave a comment or strike up a conversation on our .
