There are three types of MRP levels...MRP(Material requirement Planning),MPS(Master production schedule) and CBP(consumption based planning).
MPS is part of MRP
In MPS you can plan inportant assemblies seperately(critical parts and which has much influence on the profit a type). You can mark the assemblies as MPS parts by assgining mrp types M0-M4 in the material master MRP1 view.
The main difference between both MRP and MPS is that MPS is only good for single level BOM explosion and used for mainly Type A materials which has higher value and importance and planned carefully and greatly influence the company profits or those that require critical resource whereas MRP is used for mainly type B and C material.
Mainly idea is that master production scheduling(MPS)is a form of MRP that concentrates planning on the parts or products that have great influence on company profits or which the entire production process by taking resources. These items are marked as A parts(MPS item),and are planned with extra attention. These items are select for a separate MPS run that takes place before the MRP run.The MRP run is conducted with BOM explosion so that MRP controller can ensure that the master scheduling item are correctly planned before the detail MRP run taken place.
