SSVM Software Installation
Installing the SSVM software is essentially the same as installing any Solaris application. It is done using the standard command-line or graphical package installation tools.
SSVM Initialization
The big difference when installing SSVM is that at least one disk drive must be specially initialized and brought under SSVM control using the vxinstall utility.
RAID Volume Design
Generally, virtual volume structures are designed with one or more of the following goals in mind:
Cost savings
Performance
Availability
Maintainability
RAID Volume Administration
In larger installations, the most common SSVM administrative task is identifying and replacing failed disk drives. At the simplest level, this involves the use of a single SSVM utility, vxdiskadm. For certain strorage platforms, another utility, luxadm, must also be used during the disk replacement process.
Most SSVM administrative tasks require analyzing error messages. This is done using SSVM utilities such as vxprint and vxdisk along with some basic Solaris OS commands.
A typical virtual volume pathname would be similar to
/dev/vx/dsk/dga/volume-01
The redundant dual active controller(RDAC) driver is a special purpose driver that manages dual interface connections. This driver is available with some of the Sun hardware RAID storage arrays, which include the A3000 and A3500 models.
Standard SSVM Disk Replacement Procedure
In its simplest form, the process to replace a failed disk drive that is under SSVM control is as follows:
1, Use the SSVM vxdiskadm utility to logically remove the disk
2, Hot swap in a new disk drive
3, Use the SSVM vxdiskadm utility to logically install the new disk
