DESCRIPTION

How to use the NetPro Log Miner

REQUIREMENTS

The user account must have administrative rights to the server where the logs reside.
The .Net Framework 1.1 is also required to run the Log Miner.

EXPLANATION

The NetPro Log Miner is a very useful beta utility that helps capture trace files from ChangeAuditor for AD. Occasionally, the NetPro Technical Support staff may ask customers to use the Log Miner to capture all or specific traces, to troubleshoot problems in environments and help determine solutions.

The Log Miner will gather the trace files (logs), zip the logs into one folder, save the folder to a specified location, and give the option to email the logs to NetPro Technical Support.

The NetPro Log Miner is still a beta product. The Log Miner has options for collecting trace files from CAAD, DA, and DL. Currently, the only supported product is CAAD.

USAGE

The NetPro Log Miner can be found in %SystemRoot%Program FilesNetPro ChangeAuditor for ADTools Netpro Log Miner.exe. Double click the NetPro Log Miner.exe to start the application. The Log Miner can collect logs from 3 different components: CAAD Agents, Repository, and CAAD Client. The Log Miner has the ability to collect all the logs for all CAAD components at once or can gather the logs individually from each CAAD component depending on the selections.

All CAAD Logs Collection

To collect the trace files (logs) from the CAAD Agents, Repository, and Client:

  • Double Click the NetPro Log Miner.exe
  • Type in the name(s) of the CAAD client in the dropdown box and click the add button (Note the Log Miner will not verify the name of the client. Please be sure to type in the correct CAAD client name).
  • Type in the name of the CAAD Repository Server in the dropdown box and click the add button.
  • Click the Enumerate DC's command button. This will enumerate all of the DCs in your environment that have a CAAD agent installed.
  • Make sure the Get ChangeAuditor for AD logs radio button is selected and click the Get Logs command button.
  • An explorer window will come up and ask where the files should be saved. Select a save to location and click OK.
  • The Log Miner will then collect the desired logs and save them to the selected location. The Log Miner has an information window that explains each step in the process the miner is currently executing.
  • After the files have been saved, a pop up window will ask if the logs should be emailed to NetPro. Select Yes to email the logs straight from the utility or select No to return to the Log Miner server list.
  • If Yes, mail to NetPro was selected, a new window will appear asking for an email address to send the logs to (required), customer company information (required), and additional comments (optional).
  • Select support@netpro.com in the dropdown box, fill out the company name, and add any additional comments. Click the Send Email command button to send the logs to support or cancel to return to the Log Miner server list.

CAAD Agent Log Collection
To collect the trace files (logs) from the CAAD Agents:

  • Double Click the NetPro Log Miner.exe
  • Click the Enumerate DC's command button. This will enumerate all of the DCs in your environment that have a CAAD agent installed.
  • After the DCs have been enumerated; select the checkbox next to the DC name(s) where log files are sought.
  • Make sure the Get ChangeAuditor for AD logs radio button is selected and click the Get Logs command button.
  • An explorer window will come up and ask where the files should be saved. Select a save to location and click OK.
  • The Log Miner will then collect the desired logs and save them to the selected location. The Log Miner has an information window that explains each step in the process the miner is currently executing.

  • Select the checkbox next to the name of the client
  • Make sure the Get ChangeAuditor for AD logs radio button is selected and click the Get Logs command button.
