-   -   TSM can not restore a special folder (

BBB 03-07-2008 02:31 PM

You're only using a .0.0 version? Upgrade it.

Use the cli if the gui gives you problems. There is help on how to do it under "dsmc help".

nivek.cao 03-07-2008 02:24 PM

I tried a lot, but still can't find any "lost" file! does it have any connection with my GUI client, because it has something wrong
look at this:

nivek.cao 03-07-2008 02:06 PM

with this magic command "dsmc restore f:\INT\3.2D\OC1\3P82024721H.jpg -pick -inactive"
I got one of my "lost" file, thank you again!
now, how can I get the whole folder F:\INT, I use GUI, but the "Point in time" confuse me, and I can't find my lost files!!

C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient>dsmc restore f:\INT\3.2D\OC1\3P82024721H.jpg -pick -inactive

thank you very much,
I use GUI, and I don't know how to set the "Point in time" option
I tried a lot, but can't find anything!

nezih 03-07-2008 01:27 PM

start the tsm client gui and in the view section choose display active/inactive files, and than go to your folder and check your files...

BBB 03-07-2008 01:22 PM

Are you using gui or cli? There is a manual for both of them you could read it.

Briefly, if you want to restore it with cli run
dsmc restore f:\INT\3.2D\OC1\3P82024721H.jpg -pick -inactive

Or you can use wildcards and use the pitdate/pittime parameters (check the documentation for syntax). If you set the pitdate&time to just after the files were backed up this will restore them.

nivek.cao 03-07-2008 12:43 PM

with your new command, I can find something like this,
25,899 B 03/02/2008 09:38:57 DEFAULT I \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\3.2D\OC1\3P82024721H.jpg
my question is how can I restore this file "3P82024721H.jpg" (sorry, I am a green hand on TSM, I mean what time should I set to restore this file)

and this file come out in dsmsched.log, look at this:
03/02/2008 09:38:46 Normal File--> 25,899 \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\3.2D\OC1\3P82024721H.jpg [Sent]

and also
03/02/2008 11:48:08 Expiring--> 25,899 \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\3.2D\OC1\3P82024721H.jpg [Sent]

I think now we will find the truth, thanks!

BBB 03-07-2008 10:08 AM

Sorry my mistake, add the -inactive flag :(

dsmc q backup f:\INT\ -subdir=yes -inactive

nivek.cao 03-07-2008 07:33 AM

thanks a lot!
I use "dsmc q backup f:\INT\ -subdir=yes" but I can just find files after the 2nd Mar. 11:00PM

but I find this,
Size Backup Date Mgmt Class A/I File
---- ----------- ---------- --- ----
0 B 03/03/2008 23:39:02 STANDARD A \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\3.3D
0 B 03/03/2008 21:37:43 STANDARD A \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\3.3N
4,146 B 03/05/2008 19:44:28 DEFAULT A \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\12345.txt
2,148 B 03/05/2008 11:49:47 DEFAULT A \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\5.txt
2,671,6 B 03/06/2008 11:37:28 DEFAULT A \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\Book2.xls
2 B 03/04/2008 15:45:10 DEFAULT A \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\EXCEL.csv
0 B 03/05/2008 03:42:34 STANDARD A \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\3.3D\3.3QRA

for folders the mgmt class is standard
for files the mgmt class is default
any problem? about this policy domain config:

Policy Domain Name Policy Set Name Mgmt Class Name Default Mgmt Class?

I am sure nobody can recreate all the files and folders under F:\INT

BBB 03-06-2008 03:29 PM

No it would apply on a per file basis not for the entire directory tree. So any individual files that were recreated were probably lost 6 hours later. Are you really sure this happened though? Use the sql query above, or "dsmc q backup f:\INT\ -subdir=yes" to check.

nivek.cao 03-06-2008 02:57 PM

if there are three folders in F:\INT, and each has their own files and folders
now someone delete the "INT" folder, and we keep only one verion for 10 days
and after some time someone recreate the folder "INT" then after servel hours
our last version been deleted because we just keep 3 version exist
the problem is this "someone" just create the folder "INT" and then our last version of
backup expired? so we lost our data...

BBB 03-06-2008 12:53 PM

The "expired" statement in dsmsched.log just means the client is telling the TSM server to make them "inactive", its a bit of a confusing message. Once inactive they are processed against the retention policy you have setup, which is 1 version of deleted files which means you should still have the very last copy of that file.

If somebody recreated the file and then it was backed up again 3 times - that old copy might then be lost due to your verexists limit.

If you want to double check if the files still exist run this from the admin command line:

select * from backups where node_name='YOURNODENAMEINALLCAPS' and filespace_name='\\kabmnt1\d$' and hl_name='\INT\'

(be careful with your capitalisation (keep it as above) and the \'s)

nivek.cao 03-06-2008 11:06 AM

no one knows what cause the files lost
we suspect the files under F:\INT deleted by somebody, but we can't find any proof
the files were recreate on 3rd,
I think maybe TSM delete all the files, can it possible?
look at this, dsmsched.log

03/02/2008 11:48:08 Expiring--> 37,087 \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\2.29N\FM-N\3P82058209L-T2.jpg [Sent]

"2.29N" is a folder create on 29th Feb. "N" means "night"
even the files create on 2nd Mar. have lost strange
03/02/2008 11:48:08 Expiring--> 0 \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\3.2D\DB6 [Sent]
03/02/2008 11:48:08 Expiring--> 0 \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\3.2D\LR DB1 [Sent]
03/02/2008 11:48:08 Expiring--> 0 \\kabmnt1\f$\INT\3.2D\LR DB3 [Sent]

all the files and folders under F:\INT have expired

BBB 03-06-2008 09:20 AM

Were the files "lost" on the 2nd by them being completely deleted from the client? Were the files recreated between then and the 3rd before you tried to restore them?

nivek.cao 03-06-2008 09:04 AM

thank you very much, I understand now
it is true that we change the files under F:\INT regularly
but there is still a problem
2008.3.3 user tell me the files under F:\INT are all lost
they find out this on 2008.3.2 2:00PM
I tried to restore the lost files from TSM on 2008.3.3
but I couldn't
my problem is with
Versions Data Deleted 1 &
Retain Only Version 10
why can't I restore the lost files

BBB 03-06-2008 08:20 AM

You're backing it up every 2 hours. With retver set to 3, this means you can only restore to 6 hours ago if the file is changing regularly (3 versions x 2 hours).

nivek.cao 03-06-2008 07:39 AM

there is no error, just can't find files 4 hours ago in a special folder!

I have lots of folders in F:

and can not find files in F:\INT 4 hours ago, other folders is ok

and the dsm.opt file is all right!

now, I lost all files in F:\INT, but I can't restore them, because it happens for more

than 10 hours before I started to restore them from TSM

may 03-05-2008 04:55 PM

what's the error say?

nivek.cao 03-05-2008 04:27 PM

TSM can not restore a special folder
I backup my windows 2003 server F:\ incremental full backup every 2 hours

Versions Data Exists 3
Versions Data Deleted 1
Retain Extra Versions 10
Retain Only Version 10

and now I can not restore files in "F:\INT" one day ago

other folder is ok

what's wrong, who can help me, thanks

不能恢复数据的原因是backup/restore的 GUI出问题了,出什么问题不知道,只是不能恢复那个时间段数据,日常的数据恢复还是可以用的
>dsmc restore -pitdate=03/02/2008 pittime=09:40:00 F:\public\CELL\INT\ -subdir=yes
