In most high schools, often the NCAA, and the NBA certainly, break-away rims and tires are used. The break-away style and design allows the rim for being slightly displaced out of the hanging mechanism attached to backboard in order to snap back into place once the rim is released. That features not only provides better longevity out of the basketball method, but provides safety for the player also. Were a player to dunk hard on a static rim sufficiently, the side could be completely torn off of the backboard and the player would certainly fall in whichever direction their momentum was going. These type or kind of problems are minimized with a break-away rim.

Diverse backboard materials will vary tremendously in how well the particular basketball bounces or "rebounds" off of the surface. In raising order of reboundability, backboard materials would rank below: plastic, polycarbonate, acrylic, and then glass. While this difference in rebound may seem trivial to many basketball players, backboard material on basketball hoops can help or hinder a player's shot development. In particular, a shot that is used often as a player advances his or her skills is the "bank shot. "

This shot describes the player shooting at the backboard with the hope of bouncing the ball into the rim. With lower-end materials - like plastic, polycarbonate, and acrylic - the bank shot can become greatly altered if the backboard absorbs the impact of the ball.
