After the 1976 season, the original sports trophy was retired to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, and a new trophy was designed for the 1977 Finals, though it kept Walter A. Brown's name originally.
The new trophy design would be re-created each and every year from then on to be awarded with each NBA Playoffs Champion intended for permanent possession to display into their home arenas. The first recipients of the designed newly, everlasting championship trophy were typically the Portland Trailblazers after they beaten the Philadelphia 76ers from the 1977 NBA Finals.
