Get the right running shoes to protect yourself Minimalist shoes ranging from the extreme "barefoot" shoes to slightly more cushioned variations are still the hot trend. Shoemakers, however, realised that most people cannot get by in barelythere soles without injury and have introduced more forgiving models, resulting in the proliferation of the lightweight running shoe. In the US, the market share of such lightweight shoes has more than tripled yearon year to reach 14 per cent in February last year. This growth contributed nearly 60 per cent of the total gain in running shoe sales in the country, according to NPD. In traditional running shoes, the difference between the height of the heel and forefoot (known as a "heeltotoe drop") can be 10mm to 12mm. By contrast, minimalist shoes feature a drop of between 0mm and 6mm.

It's all about the roll when choosing running shoes Snow in West Dover, Vermont July 15, 2012. Analyzing the roll of the foot remains standard practice among fitness and medical professionals in the belief it will lead to a better shoe fit and fewer injuries. "When it comes to shoe choice, the amount of pronation control is extremely important," said Dr. Jane Andersen, a podiatrist in private practice in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. "Some people need more than others. It can cause a lot of problems if you have the wrong one." Anderson, a runner herself and past president of the American Association for Women Podiatrists, said the No. 1 cause of the overuse injuries she sees, from stress fractures to tendonitis to Plantar fasciitis (heel pain), is shoes that are worn out or the wrong fit. There are three basic levels of control for standard running shoes: neutral, stability and motion control.

SpringLoaded Running Shoe Could Help Prevent Injuries Reebok ZigTech 2.0 These were a bit heavier than most of the new running shoes, but with the same breathable material to keep your feet from overheating. The least girlylooking (a bonus in my book) and the most likely to cross over to other activities (they would make great crosstrainers). Comfort: Snug, these might not work for the more widefooted among us, but easy to wear. Performance: Perhaps a touch heavy, comparatively, but appropriate for pretty much any activity not just running. Appearance: Nicely genderneutral, slim and smart. The neon green is a little graceless and looks foamy and fake. Nike Flyknit One The handsomest of the bunch, they are also stellar running shoes, with a low ankle and fabric that stretches and gives. The stiff sole provides more support than, say, the Brooks or Vibrams, but with enough give that they feel like the middleground between barefoot feel and more structured models.
