Oklahoma State 17 seniors won 41 games against 11 losses. That 94 seasons in 2008 and 2009, an 112 mark in 2010 and 121 this season.
The Cowboys have received verbal commitments from 11 recruits. Four recruits two early high school graduates and two junior college transfers are already on campus and will participate in spring drills.
If they Cowboys sign the players who have made verbal commitments next month, they will have addressed many of the holes opened by graduation or expiration of eligibility.
Those holes look much bigger than they actually are. The Cowboys rotated position players in and out of games. So, many redshirt freshmen, sophomores and juniors learned what it takes to win in a Big 12 championship because of that playing time.
The Cowboys must reload several positions on offense and defense.
Oklahoma State must stockpile offensive linemen, receivers, quarterbacks, defensive ends, defensive tackles, safeties and cornerbacks.
And for that reason OSU coaches didn get to savor their Fiesta Bowl victory very long. Cowboy coach Mike Gundy said the staff hit the recruiting trail on Jan. 4 or 5.
The coaches were trying to fill needs with quality studentathletes, Gundy said.
Oklahoma State won be able to replace quarterback Brandon Weeden. Former minorleague baseball players don just walk on to a football team and set every school passing record in just two years on a daily basis.
Weeden situation is unique, but the Pokes aren destitute at the QB position. Former Enid High quarterback Clint Chelf has backed up Weeden for two years. In the 2011 season, he completed 20 of 30 attempts for 307 yards and three touchdowns. Walsh, who joined the team in spring 2011. Rochester (Ill.) High quarterback Wes Lunt is following Walsh footsteps. Lunt enrolled this spring and will participate in spring drills.
The starting quarterback position is there for the taking, Gundy said.
play is about leadership, confidence and finding a way for your team to rally around you. Brandon certainly earned that from our football team, Gundy said. we have to find another one.
Chelf, Walsh or Lunt will have to develop the leadership skills and earn the team respect, Gundy said.
went through this with Josh Fields. Then we had Zac Robinson and Brandon Weeden. I fully expect for us to come up with somebody that will move our offense and develop into a leader, Gundy said.
It definitely a plus that Walsh participated in spring drills in 2011 and Lunt will participate this spring.
