This year was a recordbreaker with a dozen billiondollar weather disasters, including devastating droughts and wildfires; 19 tropical storms; and Hurricane Irene, which caused more than $73 billion in losses. If 2012 is as bad or worse, are you prepared?
Consider buying a portable generator, which can cost more than $1,000 depending on power and features. Larger "standby" generators that run on propane or natural gas cost more.
Rhythm and Vines
It may be a sixhourplus drive from Auckland, but it's still the biggest and longest New Year's Eve party on offer. Once you get to Gisborne, well, it is beautiful. Plus, when you're not busy choosing between the 60 acts offered over four stages including Pendulum, Calvin Harris, Cut Copy, Grandmaster Flash, David Dallas, Electric Wire Hustle and British act Example bringing in the New Year you can head to the beach for a swim. Dubbed the "subtropical meets subbass" festival it features top overseas names such as drum'n'bass exponent Andy C, London dubstepper Distance, and a lineup of locals led by sonic dubstep duo Truth. Headlining the 10hour event, and no doubt playing into the wee small hours is harddance DJ Future Resonance, with hard house exponent Kevsey D among the many others.

The Aussie working class man joins up with a bunch , of New Zealand's working class lads for a night of rock'n'roll revelry. And if there are three acts who know how to party, it's this lot. It may not be quite as wild as the good old days, but rest assured the songs like Working Class Man (Barnesy), Rain (Dragon) and Blue Lady (Hello Sailor) will still sound the same.
25 Top CNY Lacrosse Stories of 2009
Starting the year 170 is an awesome accomplishment when you consider some of the opponents John Jay, Canandaigua, Ithaca, Orchard Park. Coach Bob Streeten and Corning East were riding both of these streaks into the middle of May. Avenging an 87 loss to CE in April, the Little Red of Ithaca (see Top Story25) brought the 17game win streak to an end.
