I will give you an example: I buy New Balance shoes that are $140 + HST in the New Balance store on Robson Street. I pay $90 for the same shoes in the US. That is not atypical.

Vancouver is NOT a shopping destination for Americans; maybe for Europeans.

Maybe you will not find Roots in the US (corner of Robson and Burrard) or you really want a Hudson Bay Wool Blanket (everything else in the Bay is the same as you will find at Macy except you will pay more).

It would be a shame if in only a bit over a day and a half in our fair city, you spent precious time looking at the same stuff you can see in any mall in Maryland.

Robson Street and Pacific Centre Mall have mostly the same shops except maybe Holt Renfrew at Pacific Centre which is a very high end store. Think Saks Fifth Avenue stuff.

Vancouver has many incredible things to see and do. l love our city but believe me, shopping is not one of those things that our city is known for unless you are from a small town elsewhere in Canada. It is why so many Vancouverites line up for an hour or more at the border to buy the same trinkets at Bellis Fair in Bellingham buty for much less.

Okay, then I would add the option of heading for Granville Island that first afternoon for a couple of hours and than Kits Point where the Maritime Museum is. You can walk there along the water edge or take a Harbour ferry from the Public Market to Kits Pont. The Maritime Museum, with the St Roch schooner that travelled the North West Passage in the 1940s. You can have a look all over the ship. I think the MM closes at 5 and GI Public Market and shops will close at 7 pm. There are food kiosks and restaurants on site. You probably love the 10 min harbour ferry ride.

v2 die as Philippine ferry sinks

MANILA, Philippines (AP) Two people died early Friday after their ferry sank in Philippine waters, but 54 passengers and crew were saved when rescuers pulled them to safety.

The ferry was going from Albay province in the center of the Philippines to the nearby province of Masbate when it sank. Coast guard and navy vessels and helicopters were searching the area, aided by local fishermen.

Officials were not sure of the exact number on board. The ferry's manifest listed 35 passengers and 22 crew, but provincial disaster official Bernard Alejandro said there were likely five more on board.

Coast guard rescuers reached most of the people about 1 nautical mile (1.6 kilometer) from the shore, where the ferry sank, said Chief Petty Officer Bayani Belesario, the deputy coast guard commander for Masbate province. Some were picked up by fishermen.

Amadeo Tan, a village chief in Masbate's Aroroy township, said his wife called him from the ferry when it was sinking.

"When we got there, we could no longer see any part of the boat. It had already sunk," he said, adding some passengers were in the water wearing life vests or in a lifeboat.

The weather was calm and apparently did not cause the sinking, according to the ferry's captain, who was among those rescued.
