A noted scholar Rabbi Michael Paley will discuss "What is Zionism Today?" in a free talk at Wagner College on Feb. 16. Rabbi Michael Paley of the UJA Federation of New York will lecture on the topic, is Zionism Today? on Feb. 16 at Wagner College. talk is free. Wagner College Chai Society and Hillel Foundation and the JCC are sponsors of the seventh annual Jewish Culture Series.

Rabbi Paley is the Pearl and Ira Meyer Scholar in Residence at the Jewish Resource Center of the UJA Federation of New York. Previously, Rabbi Paley was a professor of Jewish studies and dean at Bard College in Dutchess County. He was vice president of the Wexner Heritage Foundation in Manhattan, where he remains a member of the faculty.

For many years, Rabbi Paley served as the university chaplain at Columbia University in Manhattan. He founded the Edgar M. Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel, a program that brings together outstanding students from diverse Jewish backgrounds. He earned his bachelor degree at Brandeis University in Waltham/Boston Massachusetts and graduate degrees in Jewish and Islamic philosophy and science at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa.

The lecture be held at Wagner Spiro Hall 4.

Sponsors include the Jewish Historical Society of Staten Island, the JCC, the Jewish War Veterans, Temple EmanuEl Men Club and the Temple Israel Adult Education Committee.

The cost of $50 per person includes roundtrip transportation, admission to the museum, and a guided tour. Lunch isn included. March 1 is the reservation deadline.

The Jewish National Fund (JNF) is sponsoring a free presentation, Carmel Fires: One Year Later, by Boaz Rakia, Giv Israel fire chief, on Thursday at Congregation B nai Israel in Bay Terrace.

Carmel HaiBar nature preserve in northern Israel near Haifa was devastated in December 2010 by what is considered the worst forest fire in the nation history. Shabbat Across America will take place on March 2 at Temple Israel with a traditional Shabbat dinner and a special night of prayer, study, song and unity. More details will be announced.
