Cooking is a great way to unwind and be creative.

If you're trying to start making more food yourself, try looking at basic cookbooks in your local library or bookstore. Try making three or four of the recipes that appeal to you the most, and give yourself plenty of time to perfect your newly acquired skill.

If you are learning to cook for yourself or your family, pick up a cookbook from your bookstore or library. Look for one that has basic, easy recipes that will be fun to cook. Experiment with a few, and be patient; remember, you're learning new skills.

When trying a new seasoning for your meat, season one small piece and sample prior to cooking the entire batch of meat. Certain foods like meatballs, hamburgers and meatloaf could require very careful seasoning. It's best then to not cook all of it immediately, only to find out that the seasoning is off. If you want crispier and crunchier French fries, then soak the potatoes in a bowl of cold water for a period of at least half an hour before use. Soaking the potatoes helps to make the fibers within them stronger, which makes them better able to handle the heat during frying.

Mushrooms absorb large amounts of water, and this excess water will go into whatever you are cooking with. Get a soft, clean and wet cloth to wipe the dirt off each individual mushroom for better results.

Don't use bitter, sour, or tasteless wine in your recipes. Using a wine that you are not familiar with in your food can cause you not to like the flavor that's produced. They make wines that can be used only when you're cooking food.

Any ground meat that you buy should be blotted prior to cooking. It is always wise to blot any moisture that is present on ground meat. If you leave the moisture on the ground meat, the moisture will release as the meat cooks. It will steam off in the hot skillet. It will result in beef that is steamed, rather than seared, completely changing the flavor of your final dish.
