Did you even know there were two different types? Did you know the main difference between them is actually huge and can make a big impact on how many sales you earn? Many web hosting providers offer "free" SSL certificates with certain hosting package purchases. Before jumping on this offer because it looks too good to be true, read through this post and learn how it could actually put a negative effect on your website. A private SSL (secure socket layer) certificate can be purchased through many hosting providers and is registered directly to your website. Therefore, when someone visits your website a check is made against your certificate - your domain matches the domain that the certificate is registered to and you get the green bar or lock icon in many web browsers. On the other hand, a public SSL certificate (offered free with hosting plans at major web hosts like HostGator) is actually registered directly to the webhost?s domain; they are basically just creating an account for you on their own private SSL certificate.

This means when someone visits your website the SSL certificate will do a check but the domains will not match, giving your visitors a red bar or red x through a lock in their web browser. It may also ask you to allow the certificate before you can view the website. Now you know the difference between private and public secure socket layer certificates. Many low cost hosting providers can register both private and public certificates. The price difference is about $60 per year between getting a public cert or a private cert. You are always better off getting your own private certificate.
