Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Vladimir Guerreros second solo home run
of the night was the 400th of his career and broke a tie game in the
seventh inning, sending the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to an 8-7
victory over Tampa Bay in the opener of a three-game series.
.
Kendry Morales also went deep twice and knocked in three runs for LA,
which was coming off a series loss to the Rangers over the weekend.
Kevin Jepsen (4-3) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the
win, and Brian Fuentes survived a late scare to pick up his 32nd save of
the season.
Jason Bartlett went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, falling a
single short of the cycle for the Rays, who have dropped three of four.
Ben Zobrist knocked in two runs, while Carlos Pena added a solo homer in
defeat.
Neither starter made it out of the fifth. LAs Sean OSullivan yielded six
runs on six hits in 4 2/3 frames, while his counterpart, Matt Garza,
was hit for six runs -- four earned -- on six hits and four walks in 3
1/3 innings.
"We had a good offensive day but Garza didnt pitch the way we know he
can," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. "Vlad is going to hit home runs, we
have to do a better job."
LAs Russ Springer (0-2) started on the rubber in the seventh and fell
behind in the count to Guerrero, who reached out on an outside pitch and
muscled it the other way for a patented bad-ball home run, breaking the
7-7 tie.
"I feel good. My mom and I talked yesterday and she said only two more
home runs (to 400)," said Guerrero. "Im glad it came when the team
really needed it, everybodys happy."
Bartlett had a chance to complete his cycle in the eighth but struck out
to end the inning.
Fuentes entered in the ninth and got two quick outs before Zobrist
turned on a 2-2 pitch and sent it deep down the left-field line.
Juan Rivera sprinted over and had just enough room on the warning track
to haul it in while leaning against the fence, preserving the
nail-biter.
Evan Longoria doubled in Carl Crawford in the first and came around to
score on a base hit from Zobrist.
Guerrero cut the deficit in half with a leadoff blast in the second, and
RBI singles from Erick Aybar and Chone Figgins later in the frame put
LA in front.
Bartlett homered to open the third, and Morales countered with a two-run
blast in the bottom half.
Garza couldnt find the strike zone in the fourth, hitting a batter and
walking two others to open the frame. Maicer Izturis hit sacrifice fly,
and Garza was pulled after walking Bobby Abreu to load to bases.
Lance Cormier got out of the mess by inducing a double-play ball off the
bat of Guerrero.
Tampa Bay countered with three runs in the fifth. Crawford doubled in
Bartlett and scored on a sac fly from Zobrist. Pena followed with a
game-tying homer.
Morales second homer of the night came in the fifth, and Tampa Bay again
tied it in the sixth as Bartlett hit a triple over the head of Abreu in
right, plating Gregg Zaun.
Game Notes: Tampa Bay is 1-10 in its last 11 games on the road in this

batting average. He joins Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Stan Musial, Babe
Ruth and Ted Williams.
. Daniel Hudson impressed him Saturday night.
Hudson, making his second start since coming off the DL, made a big

to an abrupt end for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Monday.
Head coach Tim Burke had some harsh words for the members of his team
that were caught laughing on the sidelines in the midst of the teams
44-3 loss to the Calgary Stampeders on Friday.
"Its embarrassing," Burke said. "Were professionals and we should behave
in a professional manner and youre getting paid to play as hard as you
can play. We did not play as hard as we could play."
The loss was the second lopsided defeat in the last three weeks for the
Bombers, who were blanked 52-0 by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the
Labour Day Classic. The team rebounded in the Banjo Bowl but still came
up short, losing 25-24.
Burke believes the team is letting its fan-base down.
"The good people of Winnipeg pay good money to watch them play and this
is an attendance-driven league," Burke said. "Their salaries are being
paid by the fans of Winnipeg, so they deserve more than what theyre
getting."
In terms of singling out the players in question, Burke turned to the
tape to show the players exactly how their actions were playing out.
"I showed them the video of the TSN broadcast and what they were saying
at half-time and then during the latter part of the game and I said:
This is your resume. This is what people in the outside world are
thinking about you. So youve got to figure out how youre going to
respond to that. Are you going to do it with pride or are you going to
tuck your tail and run? So well see how they respond."
As for the response from the players themselves, quarterback Buck Pierce
spoke out about hhis role in calling out his teammates when necessary. .
.
"If I see something going on that I dont think should be going on, then
Ill address that and Ive got no problem doing that," said Pierce. "I
know what it takes to win in this league and we have guys – in this
locker room and in this organization – that [know] what it takes. Im not
going to put up with that."
Despite a recent rough stretch that has seen the Bombers drop four games
in a row, the playoffs are still not out of the question for the
Bombers. They play host to Hamilton on Friday and are still within
striking distance of the 4-7 Ticats. With the Roughriders and Eskimos
sitting on 5-6 records, theres still time to turn the season around and
jump into the top six, but the wins need to start accumulating soon.
Sustained success has been a problem for the Bombers according to Burke,
who is still yet to earn his first win after three weeks as the teams
head coach.
"Well see how we react this week," Burke said. "Lets say we come out and
do a great job. How are we going to react the next week? How are we
going to handle success? When youre immature, sometimes you dont handle
success any better than you handle failure."
"We cant be up and down like we are."
But amidst the lack of results, Burke wasnt heaping the blame
exclusively on his players.
"We dont have a lot of veteran, long-term guys that can sit there and
say: This is how you act as a professional," Burke said. "We try to do
that as coaches because we dont have those older veteran players to do
that."
