erman Chancellor Angela Merkel inaugurated a
memorial Wednesday in Berlin to tens of thousands of Gypsies, or Roma, killed by the Nazi regime.
The monument is a pool of water with a plinth at the center, where a fresh flower will be laid every day. It is located across the road from Germany's parliament building and close to two other memorials for Jews and gay victims of Nazis.
The pool is surrounded by panels detailing the Nazis' extermination campaign.
"Every generation must confront its own history afresh," Merkel said in her weekly video podcast. "That is why we must have appropriate places where people can also go in the future when the survivors are no longer alive," she said.
Merkel was joined at the opening
ceremony by President Joachim Gauck and about 100 elderly survivors. It is estimated that between 220,000 and 500,000 Roma were killed during World War II.
