()里的是补充的省略部分。

 

to ... 做宾语的用法，在这本书里很常见。而且也并非happen to，like to 之类的固定用法，和be to （即将做某事）的用法容易形成混淆。

网上广泛在讨论“To be is to do”的用法，这是这类问题的极精简版了。
