in U.S. history, President Barack Obama took
responsibility in the only obv ious way left.U

s responsible, I take responsibility," Obama
said at a Thursday news conference arranged t
o make that very point. "It is my job to make
sure that everything is done to shut this do
wn."No more White House parsing about how BP
is legally responsible for plugging the leak
and paying the cost, even though that remains
accurate. Obama knew that his own accountabi
lity was needed for the angry Gulf Coast comm
unities, for an administration struggling to
nail its message, for himself.And once you're
in, no poin t being subtle.In language presid
ents normally reserve for the burden of sendi
ng troops to war, Obama said of the oil spill
: "This is what I wake up to in the morning a
nd this is what I go to b ed at night thinking
about." At a time when Obama is juggling a h
ost of nettlesome problems the wars, the eco
nomy, Mideast peace he pushed them all behin
d this one, saying his government has been "s
ingularly focused" on fixing the spill.This i
s what comes with the job, and the sympathy o
f voters is not everlasting. Presidents get h
ired to fix problems they have never even con
t emplated.When a government loses its credibi
lity with the people, the blow can be devasta
ting. And although bigger issues than politic
s are in play mainly, the enormous destructi
on to the wa ters and wildlife this was clear
ly a consequential moment for Obama.A new Gal
lup poll finds that more than half those surv
eyed thought Obama was handling the crisis re
sponse poorly. That is despite all the crews
and aid and equipment Obama's team had dispat
ched, all the times his incident commander an
d his interior secretary and his West Wing ad
visers made the case to the media.
